About the event
The Great North Run is an annual half marathon event held in the North East of England. It is the largest half marathon in the world, with over 57,000 participants each year. The event was first held in 1981 and has since become a major sporting event in the region, attracting runners from around the world.
The Great North Run takes place in September and starts in Newcastle upon Tyne, crossing the iconic Tyne Bridge and finishing in South Shields. The course is largely flat and features live music and entertainment along the route.
In addition to the half marathon event, the Great North Run also includes a mini and junior run for children and a wheelchair race. The event raises funds for various charities and has raised over £250 million since it began.
The Great North Run is a popular event and often sells out quickly. Participants must register in advance to secure a place in the race. There is also a charity place option for those who wish to fundraise for a specific cause.
